SPEECH TO ACT WELLINGTON 2008 CAMPAIGN LAUNCH - Wednesday 15 October 2008

From its inception ACT has espoused three simple principles - freedom, choice and personal responsibility. I like these so much that they are emblazoned across my business card. As such, I hope you won't mind if I exercise those liberties myself because I don't intend today to give you either a policy lecture or a cheerleader chant.

I want to start ACT’s 2008 election campaign in exactly the same place that Sir Roger Douglas, Richard Prebble and a handful of other stalwarts started this party - by reflecting on those three simple principles. Why? Because I think kiwis have had enough of the game of politics. They want to hear simple messages from honest people. People who they can relate to as having the same values and vision as they do.

Speech to ACT Health Policy Launch; Cnr Hobson & Davis streets, Wellington; Wednesday, October 29 2008

Welcome to ACT's Health policy launch. We're releasing our policy outside an Ambulance Station to signify Labours' 'Ambulance at the bottom of the cliff' approach to public healthcare. Ambulance services do a fantastic job dealing with emergency situations, but our health system needs to be much more comprehensive than that.

When I launched ACT's Health policy at the last election, we released 1,152 yellow balloons - one for each person who died while on a waiting list that year. We can't do that today because the figures are not available.
